The Fourth of July was always the biggest holiday of the year for our family,
especially on the Marshall side. It wasn't just America's birthday; it was also
my paternal grand-dad’s birthday. Every year, our large family - aunts,
uncles, their spouses, and over 36 grandchildren - gathered to celebrate
Elder Albert Marshall, Sr., a towering figure both in stature and spirit.
Pop-Albert was a strict Pentecostal pastor who held his congregation and
family to high moral standards. Pop Albert's first wife passed away at 32
after giving birth to their 13th child, my Uncle Lois. Then, he married his
late wife’s cousin, Sadie. Uncle Lois, just three months old at the time, grew
up under Mama Sadie's care and remembered her as being unkind to her
new crop of step children.
Uncle Lois loved sharing stories of his rambunctious childhood. He
preached his first sermon at just three years old and never left the pulpit.
Despite his early start in the ministry, he admitted that Pop Albert’s black
strap kept him in line until the Holy Ghost truly saved him. One vivid
memory he shared was catching Mama Sadie dipping snuff behind their
house. Eager to expose her, he reported it to PaPa, who dealt with it by
"churching" Mama Sadie - excluding her from church until her behavior was
reflecting virtues of being the wife of a preacher.
I was nine when Pop Albert passed away and his funeral was as grand as
his life had been. Pop Albert was a spiritual leader and a pillar of the
community. For our family, he embodied the values of respect, tradition,
and the importance of safety and wellbeing for his family. These principles
helped to shape us as well.
As I run for Alachua County Sheriff, these family values of safety and
respect for tradition are at the core of my campaign. Just as Pop Albert set
a standard for our family, I aim to uphold the highest standards for our
community.
On this Fourth of July, as we celebrate our nation's independence, let's also
prioritize safety and community. As your Sheriff, I am committed to
upholding the values instilled by my grand-dad and I am dedicated to
honoring this legacy through my service to you. Together, we can build a
safer, stronger Alachua County.
