July 20th marks a significant milestone for me. With each passing year,
every birthday feels monumental. Thirteen years ago, on my 50th birthday, I
had a sobering realization: I’ve now lived longer than I am likely going to
live. While I might reach the ripe old age of 100, I’ve decided to play this
fourth quarter with purpose and intent as if the Championship Game of my
Life is on the line - because it is.
You might wonder why I've chosen to run for Alachua County Sheriff at this
stage of my life. Wouldn’t life be better spent relaxing on the beach, sipping
mango pineapple smoothies? It sounds lovely, but I know it wouldn’t be
long before I was lobbying for safer nesting grounds for sea turtles.
As the 11th of 13 Marshall children, my mother often called on me for
various tasks, from scrubbing her feet to washing a tub of turnip greens. I
never questioned why she always chose me; I simply did what she asked
without complaint. Reflecting on this, I realize it was because she knew I
would always get the job done without asking why she didn’t ask one of my
other siblings. Oh, let’s be clear, if I had ever sassed our mother, by asking
such a question, I would have had another story to tell.
In my early 30s, I worked at the NBC affiliate in New Orleans. One of my
colleagues pointed out that I had worked my first three months without a
day off. Thrilled to be in the Crescent City, I hadn’t even noticed. When my
news director asked me to work, I always showed up, eager to work
because that’s what she hired me to do - work.
I see it as my gift to diligently complete any task assigned to me, whether
by my mother or my Creator. I’ll bring this same work ethic to my role as
Alachua County Sheriff. I am dedicated to serving our community with the
steadfast commitment that has defined my personal and professional life. I
have been called, and the Championship Game of my life is far from over.
I am the servant leader Alachua County deserves.
