Empowering Alachua County Families: Understanding the Dangers of Fentanyl

She had a big smile on her face at the thought of signing my petition to help me get on the ballot as a candidate for Alachua County Sheriff. Then my new acquaintance started slowly shaking her head back and forth with a concerned look on her face.

“What’s wrong, I asked?

“What are you going to do about all of this fentanyl on our streets?” She continued, “My son is dead. He thought he was just smoking marajuana, but it was laced with fentanyl. We have got to do something.”

I offered my condolences, acknowledging the pain in her voice and on her face. Though I didn't have all the answers, I assured her that as Alachua County Sheriff, our approach will be multifaceted, starting with empowering families to have critical conversations at home and during gatherings. Family is where it begins; no agency or government should have more influence over our children than the family unit. As parents, we may struggle to educate our children about street dangers and drugs, fearing their anger, but when tragedy strikes, it's us parents who bear the heartbreaking phone calls.

A few years ago I moderated a University of Florida, HealthStreet panel discussion about the opioid crisis. Before this public health crisis could be solved, synthetic fentanyl started an invasion, leading to thousands of accidental drug related deaths in Alachua County and across the country.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, initially intended as a potent painkiller for medical use, has infiltrated the illicit drug market. Its extreme potency poses a lethal risk, particularly when unknowingly consumed in counterfeit pills or other substances.

Education is key. Access to resources and support is crucial for families impacted by substance use disorders. We can not KEEP ignoring that we lack adequate addiction treatment and recovery services. We must prioritize medication-assisted treatment, counseling, support groups, and naloxone distribution programs.

Community-wide collaboration is essential in tackling the fentanyl crisis. As your Alachua County Sheriff, we will strengthen efforts to unite law enforcement, healthcare, and community organizations.

We can not KEEP stigmatizing substance use disorders. We must create a culture of acceptance and compassion that encourages individuals and families affected by addiction to seek help without fear of judgment.

Together, we can reduce overdose deaths and support those affected by fentanyl addiction in Alachua County. Let's unite in our determination to build a safer, healthier future because every member of our families is counting on us.
